PAEDS UPDATE!

We hosted the paeds MOSCE for fifth years on Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of December. Thanks to our brilliant committee members (especially Bethany, Karishma and Shefali!) and some lovely volunteers, we had loads of mock patients and the fifth years came out feeling well practiced. If you missed out, keep your eyes peeled- there's another one coming for those that have paeds later on in the year.

We then had paeds and protons on the 7th of December as part of MedSoc Mondays. With a brilliant turnout, we learnt loads about paediatric radiography and the plans for the new proton beam centre being built behind the cruciform. A thorough rundown of the evening can be found on the MedSoc twitter account.

Our year was brilliantly rounded off by The Paediatrics Disney Quiz in the Print Room Cafe. We raised over £640 for Great Ormond Street, enjoyed brilliant questions, live music and pizza! :)

NOVEMBER: So what have Paeds been up to recently?

Well, in October we had our volunteering fair in the Chadwick building and managed to get a fair few medics signed up to projects like SKIP Ghana, Save a Baby’s Life and HIVE. Since then, we’ve heard back from the projects to say that our volunteers are settling in nicely- but if you want to get involved, you still can- check out our volunteering page for more information!

Then it was time for Battle of the Specialties, where we came 2nd (to a psychiatrist who works in CAMHS, so technically still first!). We had two wonderful doctors presenting loads of reasons why Paeds is the best- not limited to the variety of patients (having to speak to both the child and the adult), the sheer amount of chocolate, being a part of the ‘social sort-out’ of the child and just in general, getting to have fun with the children! You can also put children’s drawings in your portfolio, and who wouldn’t want that?

Since then your committee have been busy organising several events, not limited to:

  • A Disney quiz for Great Ormond Street, coming your way in December

  • A MOSCE

  • Our workshops for the InspireMedicine conference

  • Our very own UCL Paediatrics conference!

We hope to see you at one of our events soon, but if you’d like to keep in touch, we also have a new twitter feed- @UCLUPaediatrics :)
